When the rockets fall, the babies can’t hide

One of the sweetest people I’ve ever met is Dr. Shmuel Tzungun. He oversees the maternity ward at Barzalai Hospital in Ashkelon. I met him about a year ago when he presented me with their halfway “bomb-proof” finished maternity ward for premature babies. The very fact that they need an entire bomb-proof unit shows the seriousness of the situation in Israel.

Dr. Shmuel Tzungunn

I remember telling him that I would love to help him, but during times of peace, it’s very hard to raise funds for hypothetical needs. A few months later, Hamas invaded Israel, killing 1,200 and taking 246 hostages. Rocket rained down on our southern coastal city of Ashkelon. Ashkelon was ground zero for rocket fire.

In the video where I took these three screenshots, first responders deal with the aftermath of a rocket hitting the Barzalai Hospital. One of them yells, “Mishahu Poe?” Which means, “Is there anyone here?” as they searched for potential wounded people.

At that time, I contacted Dr. Tzungun to check on him. I had heard that the hospital had been hit a couple of times with rockets. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the plight of the premature babies remained the same. When the rockets are launched, and the air raid sirens sound, everyone takes cover. But it is impossible to move babies connected to dozens of wires, often in incubators. They simply have to hope there is no direct hit on their unit.

Since then, because of you, we have been able to donate over $60,000 to the project. Others have helped as well, and the building will be finished this summer. Dr. Tzungunn wrote me this note just before Passover.

Hi Ron,

I want to wish you and your family a happy Passover that will unite us once again and bring good news and a good summer.

The new NICU will be completed in the summer, but we are still short in our budget for crucial medical equipment. Any help would be very appreciated!

Chag Sameach!

Shmuel

In 2008, Dr. Tzungunn oversaw the birth of quadruplets by a woman in Gaza, saving all four premature babies.

We want to send $10,000, maybe more if possible. You can play a direct role in making sure that parents with premature babies do not have to live in constant terror that their children are going to be hit by a Hamas rocket. Only God knows the stress that these babies feel as the air siren sounds, and they hear explosions. It’s enough that they have to fight for their lives. But you can help them!

Please give to the Israel in Crisis fund. Let’s stand with Israel. Let’s stand with these defenseless babies. I will send you pictures and videos later this summer with Dr. Tzungun in the completed facility!

I cannot thank you enough for your love for Israel. You have been so generous over these past few months, and heaven has noticed. When the angel came to Cornelius in Acts 10:4, he said, “Your prayers and your gifts to the poor have ascended as a memorial before God.” May the Lord richly bless you, as you stand with Israel in her time of need.

Thank you!
