Brazil Trip: Clergy Sexual Abuse

Last week, I recorded a video update about my trip to Brazil. Brazil is on fire! I have never seen so many young adults passionately seeking God. But the reason I was invited had to do with the very relevant issue of Clergy Sexual Abuse. Pastor Vini Sousa, the leader of Florianópolis House of Prayer (FHOP) and pastor of the church by the same name, saw a video I did where I shared openly and honestly about what we as ministers must learn from the IHOP/Mike Bickle revelations of sexual sin. He invited me to come minister at their conference in San Paulo.

From there, other doors opened. Dwayne Roberts, who birthed FHOP, and I ministered to 150 leaders on the issues of humility and sexual purity. On Friday morning, I spent two hours with 30 pastors from Tikkun Brazil (a group of 60 churches that have sought connection with us at Tikkun Global in Israel). We went through a document I created several months ago that lays out how churches can safely and honestly deal with accusations of immortality and abuse.

At the end, I recorded a podcast for Jesus Copy with Pastor Douglas Gonçalves on the same subject. It has over two million subscribers. It will be released soon, and I want to ask for your prayers.

  • Please pray that this podcast has a powerful impact on young leaders in Brazil.

  • And please pray for me—a weak jar of clay—God has laid the message on my heart. I know the enemy will not be pleased. I know that I am capable of committing the same sins we are addressing.

  • Please pray for me to walk in purity and the fear of the Lord and pray for protection over Eland and me as a couple.

Make the Pledge

I ended most of my ministry times by challenging pastors to make a pledge that if they committed adultery or Clergy Sexual Abuse, they would be disqualified FOREVER from preaching ministry. This is my standard. Of course, anyone can be restored to Yeshua and find forgiveness, but Paul speaks of certain sins that disqualify a preacher. “I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified” (1 Cor. 9:27).

Some may believe this standard is too harsh, but we need a course correction. I recently heard a pastor say he left his congregational network after arriving at a conference and realizing that about half the speakers had had a moral failure! The oft-quoted passage about restoring those caught in sin has nothing to do with preaching ministry but being restored to Jesus (Gal. 6:1). There is no sin that Jesus didn’t die for, but forgiveness doesn’t mean restored authority. Preaching and teaching is a sacred privilege, not a right, which is why Paul is so concerned about controlling his passions so as not to be disqualified.

So, to be extremely clear: I do not believe that any leader in the body of Messiah who uses their position or spiritual authority (what Diane Langberg in Redeeming Power, would call “power”) to engage in a sexual relationship should ever be restored to preaching ministry. He is disqualified. If, God forbid, I ever fall into the trap of the enemy, that would be my fate—restored to Jesus (if I repent), but not to the pulpit. Hence, my plea for prayer.

We live in evil days. We must draw closer to God than ever before. He is there for you. His grace is still sufficient, but we must seek it.

If you are Struggling

If you are a leader struggling with temptation, I urge you to get help. It is not worth it! Turn to other leaders in your network or denomination. The pain and suffering that you will bring on your family are not worth fleeting pleasure. Remember the story of Amnon and Tamar. He was King David’s son, and he was “in love” (or so he thought) with his half-sister, Tamar. He tricked her into being alone with him, and he raped her.

She tried to reason with him, telling him that the damage he would do to himself would be irreparable, not to mention, that it would ruin her life as well. Blinded by lust and impure desire, he raped her anyway. And two years later, Tamar’s full brother Absalom would kill him. In fact, his disgrace was so great that 3,000 years later, I am writing about it here!

My point—it is not worth it! Cling to Jesus. Make the pledge and cling to Jesus.

I can't thank you enough for taking the stand that a leader should be permanently disqualified for sexual sin. Thank you! I really believe the reason it hasn't been this way s due to wolves in sheep's clothing. You can be trusted! Again, thank you.
