I was reading the other day in Psalm 63 in Hebrew. I noticed something very interesting. I think we would all agree that there is something special about sunriseādawn. Dawn leads to the sunrise and new day. Even as we give the first fruits of our income to God, we seek to give the first fruits of our day to him.
The Hebrew word translated, āearnestly I seek you,ā is connected to time. The word is ×ֲשַ××ֲרֶ×ÖøÖ¼ (ashachareka). There is a prefix and a suffix, the first letter in the last letter. The prefix × means āI will,ā and the suffix ×Ā means āyou.ā In the middle, you have a root. Every Hebrew word has a root, and it is typically three letters. The root here is ש×ר-sh-cha-r, or shachar. The root שָ××ַר (shachar)Ā is the same as in the Hebrew noun שַ××ַר (shachar), meaningĀ "dawn"Ā orĀ "daybreak."
By taking that noun and turning it into a verb. I donāt want to get too technical, but there are five stems of verbs in Hebrewāand this would be in the piel stemābut donāt worry about that. In Hebrew, the pielĀ stem intensifies an action. Here, it highlights Davidās urgent and deliberate search for God.
In the same way that dawn anticipates the day, using it as a verb emphasizes searching urgently for somethingā¦in the morning. David uses it regarding his earnest seeking for God.
What's really cool about ×ֲשַ××ֲרֶ×ָּ (ashachareka, "I earnestly seek you") and שַ××ַר (shachar, "dawn") is the poetic wordplay and spiritual depth hidden in Hebrew:
Same Root:
Both words share the root ש××ר (shachar), which means "dawn" or "early morning."
Powerful Imagery:
David is saying,Ā "I seek You like someone waiting desperately for the first light of dawn."Ā Itās not just casually looking aroundāitās passionately and eagerly longing for God, just like youād eagerly wait for the firsbesigns of sunrise after a long, difficult night.
Urgency and Priority:
Seeking God at dawn means Heās your first priority. Just as dawn breaks the night, seeking God earnestly can break spiritual darkness, dryness, and thirst.
Hope and Expectation:
Dawn symbolizes new beginnings, hope, and renewal. Using this word to describe seeking God highlights that when you genuinely pursue Him, it brings fresh hope and renewal to your soul.
In other words, in one Hebrew word (×ֲשַ××ֲרֶ×ÖøÖ¼), David beautifully captures a picture of urgently, expectantly, and hopefully turning toward God, just like eagerly awaiting the sunrise (שַ××ַר) after a dark, weary night.
I hope that blesses you this morning!
Shabbat Shalom!
