With Bibi at his side, Trump officially recognizes Golan Heights as Israeli

Underscoring Israel’s right to self-defense, U.S. President Donald Trump formally recognized the Jewish state’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stood beside him in Washington.

“This was a long time in the making and it should have taken place many years ago,” Trump said during a ceremony to sign the Golan proclamation.

Following the American move, the IDF and police began preparing for protests in the northern Golan Heights, from both sides of the border.

The proclamation — just hours after a Hamas rocket hit a home in central Israel — marked yet another unprecedented decision by the administration that bolsters U.S.-Israeli relations. This, according to Trump, would “allow Israel to defend itself” against the “significant security challenges it faces every single day.”

“Any possible future peace agreement in the region must account for Israel’s need to protect itself from Syria and other regional threats,” the American proclamation reads. “Based on these unique circumstances, it is therefore appropriate to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.”

MORE ON THE GOLAN HEIGHTS: I made two short videos on the issue last weekend:

Netanyahu thanked Trump and noted that the strategic plateau, which borders hostile Syria, is “invaluable” to Israel’s self-defense.

“Your proclamation comes at a time when the Golan is more important than ever for our security, when Iran is trying to establish bases in Syria to strike at Israel. From across the border in Syria, Iran has launched drones into our airspace, missiles into our territory,” Netanyahu said.

Last week Trump tweeted that it was “time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” giving rise to speculation that the sentiment would become official U.S. policy. After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!

Another indication came with the publication last week of the U.S. State Department annual human rights report for 2018: The document dropped the word “occupied” when referring to the Golan Heights.

The international community does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the area, which Israel captured in Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War.  Syria, a new nation itself, gained full independence from France in 1945. From 1948 until 1967,

“…the Syrian army used the strategic Heights to shell Israeli civilian settlements along the border. There were many incidents of shooting at fishing boats on the Kinneret. As a result of these shelling, 140 civilians were killed and many more injured…In the very last days of the [Six-Day] war, following pressure from Jewish settlements in northern Israel, the Israeli government decided to conquer the Golan Heights and put an end to the threat of Syrian shelling on the Hula Valley communities. Times of Israel

However, Israel’s claim to the land goes back to Biblical time when it was part of the land of Dan and Manasseh, when it was called Bashan. (Deut. 4:43) Golan was the name of city in the region. The fact that it still goes by Golan today, is proof of her Jewish origens.
