Trump declares Israeli politics is ‘all messed up’

Disappointed after the Israeli Knesset voted to disband itself last week and head toward new elections instead, U.S. President Donald Trump said Israelis should “get their act together.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a government by the deadline and the Knesset voted to dissolve itself in favor of new elections which will take place in September.

“Israel is all messed up in their election,” Trump told reporters. “Bibi got elected and now they have to go through the process again? We’re not happy about that.” Of course, President Trump know little of the Israeli system; it is quote different from the USA’s. Just winning is not enough, you have to then build a coalition of 51% to govern. Often the parties that are invited have competing core issues.

Trump has enjoyed a good relationship with Netanyahu and no doubt was hoping he’d be in office again to receive the American peace plan proposal, which Trump has referred to as “the deal of the century.”

The plan’s reveal will probably face another delay until a new government is installed.

Trump also admitted that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo may be right in saying that the administration’s peace plan may fail. A Washington Post report quoted Pompeo as telling a group of Jewish leaders in New York that the long-delayed plan may not “gain traction.”

The Washington Post leaked remarks from a closed-door meeting in which Pompeo expressed skepticism about the plan saying it had many aspects “only the Israelis could love.”

“This has taken us longer to roll out our plan than I had originally thought it might — to put it lightly,” Pompeo noted. He also said some parts could be considered “unexecutable.”

When asked about Pompeo’s skepticism, Trump said, “He may be right.”

“When Mike says that, I understand when he says that, because most people think it can’t be done. I think it probably can. But, as I say often, we’ll see what happens,” Trump said.

Palestinians have already said they will reject any United States peace plan.
