A Republican lawmaker is calling for the House of Representatives to remove of Rep. Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee due to anti-Semitic comments she has made in the past.
Rep. Brian Babin, from Texas, proposed a measure to remove the Democrat from Minnesota from the committee after Democratic leaders targeted Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, accusing her of anti-Semitic remarks, The Hill reported.
The House Ethics committee is considering Greene be stripped of her two committee assignments due to unspecified “conduct she has exhibited.” To be clear, I find Ms. Greene’s rhetoric and actions to be disgusting and worthy of being stripped of her committee assignments. However, if we are going to do that, we should punish racism and anti-Semitism equally on both sides of the aisle, be Ms. Omar has received a pass for her Jew-hatred.
The Muslim congresswoman has made several anti-semitic and anti-Israel statements and maintains a seat on the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Babin said Democrats should have thought of their own party member before attacking the GOP congresswoman.
“If the Democrat Majority wants to go down this road, they should start by dealing with their own members who have been at this before and AFTER their election to Congress,” Babin wrote, according to The Hill.
In 2012 Omar wrote, “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.”
In 2019 she suggested that Republicans were attacking her because the pro-Israel lobby, AIPAC, wanted them to.
In September 2019, she told a CBS reporter that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “existence” is a problem.
“I certainly hope that the people of Israel make a different decision. And my hope is that they recognize that his existence, his policies, his rhetoric really is contradictory to the peace that we are all hoping that that region receives and receives soon,” Omar said. “I think what is really important is for people to understand that you have to give people the opportunity to seek the kind of justice they want in a peaceful way. And I think the opportunity to boycott, divest, sanction is the kind of pressure that leads to that peaceful process.”
She also recently accused Israel of carrying out “ethnic cleansing” after Israeli security forces demolished homes built illegally by Bedouin in the Jordan Valley.
