Despite tunnel destruction, Hezbollah still planning attack on Israel

Hezbollah’s leader dismissed Israel’s discovery of several cross-border attack tunnels and said that wouldn’t hamper the terror organization’s plans to attack northern Israel. Hassan Nasrallah, in his first interview in months, said the group’s plans for an invasion of the Galilee remained intact. “The Israelis discovered a number of tunnels after many years, and it’s not a surprise. The surprise is that these tunnels, they took some time to find,” Nasrallah said on the al-Mayadeen channel, calling it a “failure” of Israel’s intelligence services. “The uncovering of the tunnels does not affect by 10 percent our plans to take over the Galilee. If we decide to do it — even if they’ve destroyed the tunnels — can’t we rebuild them?” He confirmed Israeli military leaders’ warnings that Hezbollah’s plan “is to enter the Galilee, a part of our plan we are capable of, God willing. The important thing is that we have this capability and we have had it for years.” “In any war that happens, all of occupied Palestine will be a war and battlefield,” he added.

Yawn…To be clear, this is what we call “spin”. There is nothing worse in the Arab than losing face. And Israel’s discovery and destruction of these tunnels is a big embarrassment and setback to Hezbollah. In the Middle East—and we see the same thing right now with the rhetoric coming out of Iran after Israel’s destruction of their bases in Syria—rhetoric is king and over-the-top rhetoric is often the sign of insecurity, not victory. Former IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot said Nasrallah’s claims about the existence of additional tunnels are untrue. “[Nasrallah’s] claim that there are things we don’t know about is baseless,” Eisenkot said.
